August moodboard: Lasso
Introducing August’s mood
“Lasso”
August is all about getting back to my roots.
Did you know that ‘country girl’ runs in my blood?
My grandparents owned a cattle (and once sheep) station west of Charleville. They sold it seven years ago and these are some photos of our last ever trip out there.
My childhood was spent watching sunsets over the dam, acting as a roustabout in the shearing shed, driving for hours around the property checking on the stock while listening to a very crackled version of ABC news or the cricket, and learning how to cook with Grandma in her kitchen.
My grandma is a fiercely strong woman. Women of the land always are.
She raised three kids on a property with no electricity, dirt floors and the nearest shop hours away. She was the best cook and taught me so much. Not just skills, but tenacity and perseverance.
When she was in her fifties, she moved to town and studied to be a chef at TAFE.
I know that if she had her time again in this era, she would be a foodie Tik Toker for sure.
Sometimes I like to remind myself of the women who came before me. The opportunities that we have. And the strength that they instilled within us.
So while it may at times feel scary to forge a new path, we can look back and summon their giddy up.
After this last ever trip, I started studying graphic design. I was working in public relations at the Queensland Police at the time. And with a huge chapter of my life closing, it got me thinking about what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go.
I had no idea that it would lead to running my own business like this.
And while Grandma doesn’t completely understand what it is I do (or sometimes thinks I am still in school), I know deep down she is very proud of me.
This is for you Margaret.
PS how cute is the last photo of her waving us goodbye? 👋 👵
